Mary McDonnell

Mary McDonnell, a two-time Oscar(r),-nominated actress, is best known for her performances on screen in both contemporary and historical roles. She has also had a long line of acting roles on stage and screen. Mary Eileen McDonnell was born on the 28th of April 1952 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to Eileen (Mundy) and John McDonnell, a computer consultant Both from Irish origin. Born in Ithaca, New York, she graduated from the State University of New York (SUNY) in Fredonia. She then attended drama school after which she was accepted into the Long Wharf Theatre Company (East Coast). In the following two decades, she landed her breakthrough film role, in Kevin Costner's Dances with Wolves (1990) in which she played "Stands with a Fist" who is a white woman who is raised by the Sioux Indians. For the role, she received her first Academy Award nomination. McDonnell has starred in the Lawrence Kasdan films Grand Canyon (1991), and Mumford (1999) with such experienced actors as Robert Redford as well as Sidney Poitier. She also played in Roland Emmerich's Independence Day (1996), featuring Will Smith. Margin Call (2011) that was directed by Kevin Spacey, earned McDonnell the Robert Altman award at the 2012 Independent Spirit Awards. McDonnell was the President Laura Roslin in the critically popular series Battlestar Galactica (2004) on Syfy. McDonnell was a star in four seasons. McDonnell received an Emmy for her recurring guest role on the TV show ER (1994). TNT's acclaimed drama series Major Crimes (2012) features her as Captain Sharon Raydor. This is the sequel to The Closer (2005) in which McDonnell developed the role. She was nominated to win an Primetime Emmy(r). She was awarded an Best Actress Academy Award(r) nomination and a Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of the paraplegic soap-opera star in John Sayles's critically acclaimed film, Passion Fish (1992).
