Padma Parvati Lakshmi was born on September 1, 1970, in Chennai, India. Lakshmi was divorced by her parents at the age of two years old. Her mother emigrated to the United States to escape the stigma of divorce in India. Lakshmi resided in Chennai with her maternal grandparents for two years, before moving to the United States.
