Lea Katherine Thompson
Thompson was
born May 31 of 1961 in Rochester (Minnesota), [ the youngest of five children
of Clifford Barry Thompson and musician. She has two older sisters, Coleen
Goodrich (and Shannon Katona) and two brothers younger than her, Barry and
Andrew. Her mother is of Irish descent. She began ballet training in her early
years and started dancing professionally by the age of 14, winning scholarships
to San Francisco Ballet, the Pennsylvania Ballet, and the American Ballet
Theatre. When she turned 20 old and dancing professionally with American Ballet
Theatre's Studio Company (then known as ABT II), the time was right to make a
decision on whether she would move to the company's main stage. Mikhail
Baryshnikov (the director of the artistic department at the time) advised her
that she was a fantastic dancer but was too tall. In her words, that was
"my epiphany " when I decided to give up dancing and become a ballet
dancer. It was a wonderful moment. I could have smashed my head on the wall for
ten years. "[She switched to acting. She moved to New York at the age of
20 and appeared in a variety of Burger King commercials in the 1980s along with
Sarah Michelle Gellar. Her co-star in Back to the Future Part II was Elisabeth
Shue. Jaws 3D was her film debut in 1983. In addition, I'd said that I could
water ski. It wasn't the case. Because I was required by law to take part in
the Sea World water-skiing program, I had just five days to learn water-skiing
basics. I don't know how to could swim!" This was followed up with All the
Right Moves (1983), Red Dawn(84), as well as The Wild Life (1984).
